The Truth About Spray Tans: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment

If you’ve been thinking about getting a spray tan but feel a little nervous, you’re not alone. One of the most common things I hear from first time clients is, “I’ve never done this before, and I don’t know what to expect.”

The good news? A professional spray tan should leave you feeling more confident, not stressed. My goal is to make the entire experience simple, comfortable, and customized just for you.

Will I look Orange?

Let’s get this one out of the way first.

No, not when it’s done correctly.

Modern spray tanning solutions are designed to enhance your natural skin tone, not turn you orange. I customize each tan based on your complexion and the look you’re going for, whether that’s a subtle glow before vacation or a deeper bronze for a special event.

What should i wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable.

Some clients wear dark, loose fitting clothing after their appointment. During the spray tan, you can wear as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. Your comfort and privacy always come first.

How Should I Prepare?

Getting the best results starts before your appointment.

Before your spray tan:

  • Exfoliate your skin 24 hours beforehand.
  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before.
  • Skip lotions, oils, makeup, deodorant, and perfume on the day of your appointment.
  • Wear loose, dark clothing afterward.

Following these simple steps helps your tan develop evenly and last longer.

What Happens After My Appointment?

I’ll let you know exactly how long your solution needs to develop before rinsing.

After your first rinse:

  • Keep your skin hydrated with a quality moisturizer.
  • Avoid products containing mineral oil, petroleum, or heavy exfoliating ingredients.
  • Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing with a towel.
  • Limit long hot baths and excessive chlorine when possible.

With proper care, most spray tans look beautiful for about a week.

Is a Spray Tan Safe?

A spray tan only colors the outermost layer of your skin. Unlike tanning beds or sunbathing, it doesn’t expose your skin to UV radiation.

While a spray tan doesn’t replace sunscreen, it can give you the sun kissed look you love without spending hours in the sun.
